On a set we have a crew which closely mirrors a professional film set, albeit not so large and it is sometimes necessary to “double up”. Headed up by the director with a lighting cameraman, camera operator, assistant camera operator, focus puller, sound recordist, boom operator, continuity, set dressing etc. etc.
For most functions each production will have shadow crew wherever possible so that someone else can step in for unavoidable absences, and it is by shadowing someone more experienced that we hope to bring new members the chance to get started in the creative process.
The only initial requirement for joining us and playing a part in the stimulating and creative process of a film shoot is enthusiasm and availability.
Directing
There is no one individual who directs our productions. To direct a production or head up a workshop a director must be a member of the Company and have the confidence of the Company and with sufficient knowledge and confidence to embark on the production. Directing a workshop exercise it a good starting point for the inexperienced.
Most shoots will require an assistant director and this is a another way to gather experience. Once he or she is chosen the director will have absolute authority on the set. It follows however that any intelligent director will listen to suggestions from cast or member of the crew, however to avoid lengthy debates which cost valuable time, the director needs to be decisive.
Casting
Speaking parts in our productions will usually be offered to people with solid experience of acting including those from amateur dramatic theatre companies. All parts are subject to the actor being comfortable with being on a film set and to a screen test to ensure that they have the look and the manner for the role and can adapt to the requirements of working to the camera. We recognise that actors who have previously acted in stage productions might be daunted at the prospect of working to the camera. You are welcome to ask for our “Introduction for Actors” to give you an initial insight.
If you would like to be considered for future roles whether it be a speaking part or as an extra please let our casting director Anna Reynolds have your details email
