First Eye developed out of TOADS Theatre Company in Torquay. We are focused on making narrative films, a script and dialogue unfolding a fictional story albeit perhaps based on fact. This might involve a comparatively short film right up to a feature length production, we are not limited to “shorts” i.e. films of under twenty minutes. Our role is therefore somewhat different to cine and video clubs and to most individual film makers or animation and documentary treatments. The falling cost of producing drama in the recorded media thanks to digital technology now opens up the opportunity to be the “film” equivalent of an amateur dramatic company.
We aim for excellent scripts, good acting, the best equipment we can have available, and a director and crew who are striving for best artistic and technical standards. We do not have big budgets and must therefore “punch above our weight” by being highly motivated, innovative, and by improvising without compromising on our mission to produce excellent narrative film making albeit in the new electronic media.
Membership of our Company is open to anyone over the age of eighteen. Recent students of Media Studies which included film making and who found that the process really interested them can continue to develop their knowledge and skills with us. Taking part in our productions with a screen credit will hopefully be a useful addition to a CV. At the other end of the age scale retired or semi retired people who are interested in a rewarding hobby working with like minded people may find great satisfaction in film making whether it be working at the heart of the process or more casually as extras or catering or transport.
We are also developing as educational resource for people interested in film making in the community. This will include a small library of books to borrow, a comprehensive list of useful web sites and resources and basic training notes and primers for each discipline in film making including film acting and directing. We will run occasional workshop days and invite none members and industry professionals to take part and share their skills.
